Improving home moving in the UK Roundtable: insights from our discussion

Improving the home moving process in the UK will not happen through a single initiative or organisation acting alone. It requires open discussion, shared responsibility and practical collaboration across the sector.

With that in mind, we recently brought together senior leaders from across the home moving ecosystem for a roundtable discussion hosted in partnership with The Intermediary. The aim was simple. To have an honest conversation about where the industry is today, what is holding progress back, and what tangible steps can be taken now to move things forward.

Who attended

The discussion welcomed representatives from across conveyancing, lending, technology and property services, including Connells Group, Nationwide Building Society, iamsold & iamproperty, Optimus, LPL, HM Land Registry, CAL (Conveyancing Alliance), Fidler & Pepper Lawyers, Landmark Information Group and GOTO Group.

Bringing together a broad mix of perspectives was deliberate. Each organisation plays a different role in the transaction process, but all are impacted by the same challenges and opportunities.

The focus of the discussion

The roundtable explored several interconnected themes shaping the future of home moving:

  • how the industry attracts, supports and retains talent

  • how conveyancing is perceived and communicated as a career

  • the role of collaboration in driving meaningful change

  • the importance of trusted information and transparency

  • what practical improvements can be made today, not just in the long term

A recurring theme was that while individual firms are making progress within their own organisations, real transformation depends on shared standards, better upfront information and coordinated action across the sector.

Moving from discussion to action

Participants were clear that progress does not need to wait for large scale reform. Practical steps such as improved instruction packs, clearer data standards and greater trust in shared information were highlighted as ways the industry can reduce delays, improve certainty and deliver a better experience for both professionals and clients.

There was also strong agreement that the industry needs to better articulate the value of conveyancing. The work underpins the wider economy, yet this impact is often overlooked. Telling a clearer, more accurate story about the role conveyancers play is essential if the sector is to attract the next generation of talent.

Keeping the conversation going

This roundtable was not intended as a one-off. It was a starting point for continued dialogue and collaboration across the industry. By sharing the insights and perspectives raised, we hope to encourage further discussion and practical progress.
